ESA Invests in Arctic Earth Observation Supersite, ArkEdge Space Secures $60 Million in Series B Funding

The European Space Agency (ESA) is collaborating with the Finnish Meteorological Institute to establish an Earth observation calibration and validation supersite in Sodankylä, Finland. This initiative, part of ESA's FutureEO research and development program, will leverage the Arctic Space Centre's strategic location and surrounding boreal forest to enhance the accuracy of satellite data. The supersite will contribute to improved satellite-based information for applications relevant to the Arctic region.

Meanwhile, ArkEdge Space, a Japanese space startup specializing in micro-satellite constellations, has secured JPY 8 billion (approximately $60 million) in Series B funding. Led by Incubate Fund KK, the funding round also saw participation from JIC Venture Growth Investments Co., Ltd., and WiL, bringing ArkEdge Space's total funding to JPY 10.7 billion. The company plans to utilize the funds to accelerate the development of commercial satellite constellations for various applications, including maritime satellite communications (VDES) and multi-wavelength remote sensing. ArkEdge Space aims to address global challenges and sustainable infrastructure needs through its innovative solutions.
