OpenAI Introduces Phone Sign-Ups and New Tasks Feature for ChatGPT

OpenAI has begun testing a new feature allowing users to sign up for ChatGPT using only a phone number, without the need for an email. Currently available in beta in the U.S. and India, this feature aims to simplify account creation.

However, users who register with a phone number face restrictions. They cannot upgrade to paid plans like ChatGPT Plus or Pro without verifying their account via email. Additionally, multi-factor authentication is not supported, and once a number is linked to an account, it cannot be reused for new accounts.

OpenAI warns that using recycled phone numbers may cause errors, and users may need to wait for a system update in 2025 for potential solutions.

In parallel, OpenAI has introduced a 'Tasks' feature in ChatGPT, currently available in beta for paid subscribers. This feature allows users to set reminders for upcoming tasks, similar to digital assistant services. Users can input text commands like 'remind me to complete my tasks today' and manage reminders through the ChatGPT app.

These developments come as OpenAI seeks to expand its user base, with ChatGPT reportedly having over 300 million weekly users. Despite significant revenue expectations, the company is still working towards profitability, facing a projected loss of around $5 billion for fiscal year 2024.
