India Invests Rs 990 Crore in AI Centres for National Growth

The Government of India has approved an investment of Rs 990 crore to establish three Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in New Delhi, focusing on Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities.

Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan announced the initiative, aimed at positioning India as a global leader in AI innovation and research.

The CoEs will collaborate with premier institutions and industry stakeholders over a five-year period, from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28, to drive interdisciplinary research and develop scalable AI solutions.

These centres align with the government's vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) and are expected to create jobs while fostering a vibrant start-up ecosystem.

An apex committee, co-chaired by Dr. Sridhar Vembu, will oversee the initiative, ensuring that it contributes to national goals and enhances India's global AI standing.

Pradhan highlighted the transformative potential of the CoEs in generating wealth and promoting sustainable development, emphasizing their role in bridging the gap between academic research and practical implementation.

This investment underscores the government's commitment to leveraging AI as a key driver of national progress, with the aim of addressing critical challenges in healthcare efficiency, food security, and urban sustainability.

As the initiative unfolds, India is set to strengthen its position in the global AI landscape, fostering innovation and collaboration in the field.
