Cyclone Formation Alert in Bay of Bengal - November 27, 2024

Chennai is currently experiencing uncertainty as a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has slowed its intensification into a cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the deep depression was situated approximately 500 km south-southeast of Chennai as of 5:30 PM on Wednesday, moving at a reduced speed of three km per hour.

Earlier in the day, the system was progressing at 13 km per hour and was anticipated to strengthen into a cyclone by Wednesday night. The IMD indicated that it is 'very likely' to continue moving north-northwestward along the Sri Lankan coast and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours.

Following this period, the system is projected to maintain its north-northwest trajectory, potentially reaching the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts as a deep depression by the morning of November 30. In response to the evolving situation, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued orange and yellow alerts for coastal districts of Tamil Nadu for the upcoming three days, forecasting strong winds associated with the prevailing weather system.
