President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially designated Paoay Lake in Ilocos Norte as a Protected Landscape, a significant move to ensure the long-term conservation of its rich biodiversity and ecological importance. This landmark declaration, enacted through Republic Act 12230, underscores a commitment to preserving this vital natural resource for future generations.

Paoay Lake, the largest natural lake in Ilocos Norte, is a critical habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna. Its waters teem with various fish species and aquatic plants, while the surrounding vegetation supports a vibrant avian population, attracting both resident and migratory birds. Historically known as Lago de Nanguyudan, the lake has a rich past, having been declared a national park in 1969. The new designation as a Protected Landscape under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) signifies a strengthened approach to its management and protection.

To oversee the conservation efforts, a Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) has been established. This board comprises representatives from national and local government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the provincial governor, local legislators, the congressional district representative, and the mayor of Paoay. The PAMB will be responsible for approving management plans, allocating funds, and setting policies to harmonize conservation with existing development plans.

Furthermore, an integrated fund has been created to bolster the protection and management of Paoay Lake. This financial mechanism will support conservation initiatives through grants and donations from both local and international sources, ensuring the sustainable upkeep of this crucial ecosystem. The law also mandates the establishment of a Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) to handle the day-to-day administration and protection of the area.

The designation of Paoay Lake as a Protected Landscape is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of preserving unique natural environments. It highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the collective responsibility to safeguard them. This initiative not only aims to protect the lake's biological richness but also to foster a deeper appreciation for the natural heritage of Ilocos Norte, ensuring its ecological integrity and cultural significance endure.
