The Antarctic snow petrel (*Pagodroma nivea*) is a small, all-white seabird native to Antarctica. It is one of only three bird species observed at the Geographic South Pole, alongside the Antarctic petrel and the south polar skua. This species is notable for its extensive breeding range, with colonies established on the Antarctic continent and various subantarctic islands, including South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the South Orkney Islands. Some colonies are located up to 440 kilometers inland, such as those in the Theron Mountains.
Historically, the snow petrel has been a subject of scientific interest. The German naturalist Georg Forster first described the species in 1777 during his voyage with Captain James Cook. He noted the bird's distinctive white plumage and its association with icy environments.
In terms of conservation, the snow petrel is currently classified as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This status is attributed to its large population and the remote, vast habitats it occupies. However, climate change poses potential future threats. Variations in sea ice extent can impact the availability of foraging habitats, as the species relies on pack ice for feeding. Additionally, extreme weather events, such as intense snowstorms, have been observed to affect breeding success. For instance, in the 2021/2022 breeding season, severe snowstorms led to near-complete breeding failure in some colonies.
