Interactive Map to Protect Whales and Dolphins in the Atlantic: A Collaborative Effort for Ocean Health

Researchers from the IUSA and IOCAG in the Canary Islands are collaborating with Portugal, Ireland, and France to create an interactive map aimed at protecting whales and dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean. This project, known as Atlantic Whale Deal, seeks to mitigate the risk of collisions between vessels and these marine mammals, which are crucial indicators of ocean health.

The increasing maritime traffic and faster vessel speeds pose a significant threat to cetaceans, often resulting in fatal collisions. The project aims to identify high-risk areas for such collisions and develop strategies to minimize their impact. This initiative involves experts from various disciplines, including oceanographers, marine biologists, and engineers, who are working together to collect real-time data on cetacean behavior and vessel movements.

The Canary Islands, with their rich cetacean biodiversity, are particularly vulnerable to these collisions. The project seeks to create a valuable tool for policymakers, businesses, and scientists to implement measures that protect these vital marine species while supporting sustainable economic development.

The interactive map, which is expected to be completed by November 2026, will provide a comprehensive overview of risk areas and potential mitigation strategies. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research and international cooperation in safeguarding the health of our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them.
