Trump Administration Sues Illinois and Chicago Over Sanctuary City Policies

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, alleging that their sanctuary city policies obstruct federal authorities from enforcing immigration laws. The lawsuit, filed on January 31, 2025, is the first by the Trump Department of Justice against states or municipalities with sanctuary city policies.

The lawsuit specifically targets Illinois' "Trust Act," Chicago's "Welcoming City Ordinance" and Cook County's "Policy for Responding to ICE Detainers." These policies aim to limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, except in cases involving federal criminal warrants.

The Trump administration argues that these policies hinder the federal government's ability to enforce immigration laws and keep Americans safe. The lawsuit seeks a temporary and permanent injunction against the enforcement of these policies.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have both stated that they will defend their respective states' and city's sanctuary policies. They argue that these policies are compliant with federal law and prioritize police resources for fighting crime.

The lawsuit is the latest action by the Trump administration to advance its mass deportation push of undocumented immigrants. It follows a directive issued by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on her first day in office, instructing the Justice Department to investigate state or local officials who resist the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
