On October 7, 2024, Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria reaffirmed the federal government's dedication to enhancing collaboration with the private sector to stimulate the nation's economic growth and industrialization. During a meeting with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in preparation for its 30th summit, Shettima emphasized the essential role of the private sector in advancing the government's agenda for job creation and industrialization.
Shettima stated, "Our nation is pregnant with possibilities. Hope springs eternal from the hearts of men," while recognizing the NESG as a vital economic organization capable of helping Nigeria reach its potential. He highlighted the importance of electricity in fostering industrialization, asserting that without power, industrialization would be unattainable. He expressed confidence that Nigeria could significantly influence development across Africa if the right measures are implemented.
The Vice President also noted that the current administration is particularly responsive to business needs, asserting, "We have never gotten a government that is as business-friendly as this one." He pledged support for the private sector, viewing it as crucial for economic growth and the creation of opportunities for youth.
Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Tope Fasua, urged the NESG to translate discussions into actionable results, stating, "We cannot have economic development without growth." Furthermore, Rukaiya El-Rufai, Special Adviser on NEC and Climate Change, called for the NESG to "localize global discussions" to ensure effective post-summit coordination.
Mr. Omoboyede Olusanya, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the NES#30, described the summit as a pivotal platform for discussing regulatory reforms necessary for Nigeria's economic competitiveness. The summit is set to include meetings with CEOs from Francophone countries and sessions addressing critical topics such as local pharmaceutical manufacturing and energy sector dynamics, aiming to foster collaboration among stakeholders for sustainable development.
Olusanya emphasized the goal of creating actionable frameworks to tackle Nigeria's pressing economic challenges, with additional discussions planned on food security, digital inclusion, and healthcare access, alongside high-level panels focusing on fiscal reforms and infrastructure development.
