Tensions Rise Over Iran's Nuclear Program Amid International Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to comments made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding potential changes to Iran's nuclear doctrine. Netanyahu stated, "We will take any necessary action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," during an interview on November 28, 2024.

Araghchi, during his visit to Portugal, warned Western nations that if they proceed with reimposing UN sanctions, the nuclear discussions within Iran could shift towards acquiring nuclear weapons. His remarks came ahead of a meeting between senior diplomats from the European Troika (Germany, France, and the UK) and Iranian officials in Geneva.

In a confidential report, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed that Iran plans to deploy over 6,000 new centrifuges at its Fordow and Natanz facilities for uranium enrichment. The report indicates that Iran's enrichment levels will remain capped at 60%, in line with its nuclear development plans.

The IAEA's recent resolution criticized Iran's nuclear program and called for a comprehensive report on its activities by Spring 2025. This resolution was supported by 19 member states, while 12 abstained, and was opposed by Russia, China, and Burkina Faso.

In response to the IAEA's actions, Iran announced its intent to accelerate uranium enrichment using new, advanced centrifuges, labeling the resolution as politically motivated and destructive.
