Viasat Launches Satellite LTE in Mexico

Viasat, Inc. has partnered with Altán to introduce Mexico's first satellite broadband LTE service for homes and mobile users. This innovative service aims to connect remote communities across 13 states, providing internet access to over 100,000 individuals previously without cellular coverage.

The service combines advanced satellite technology with Altán's shared mobile network, featuring low-cost LTE infrastructure. Some LTE towers operate entirely on solar power, ensuring connectivity in rural areas even without traditional electricity access.

Héctor Rivero, Viasat's General Manager in Mexico, emphasized the initiative's role in promoting digital inclusion, empowering educators and students with educational resources, enhancing healthcare through telemedicine, and fostering local commerce with digital tools.

Since 2021, Viasat has been part of the 'Internet para Todos' government program, which aims to reduce the digital divide by providing connectivity to schools and clinics in underserved regions. Despite 81.2% of Mexicans aged six and older using the internet in 2023, significant disparities remain between urban and rural areas, highlighting the ongoing need for such initiatives.

With speeds of up to 150 Mbps and flexible plans, Viasat's new service stands out as a vital option for those in remote regions, addressing the critical need for reliable internet access.
