The exhibition "Gianni Versace. Retrospective" will open on February 7 at the Centro Cultural Fundación Unicaja in Málaga, celebrating the life and work of the iconic fashion designer who transformed the industry. This retrospective pays homage to Versace's legacy, intertwining his artistic vision with the cultural context of his time.

Born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, Versace's passion for design began in his mother's sewing workshop. Although he initially pursued architecture, he moved to Milan to launch his brand in 1978, alongside his siblings Santo and Donatella. Versace's approach to fashion blended tradition with modernity, resulting in bold, sensual designs that redefined aesthetics.

His use of vibrant colors, baroque prints, and unconventional materials, such as safety pins and chains, challenged the norms of high fashion. Versace attracted a host of celebrities, becoming a favorite among stars like Madonna, Prince, and Princess Diana, who used his designs to express their identities.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he played a pivotal role in the rise of supermodels, with Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss serving as muses for his brand. For Versace, fashion was not merely about clothing but about enhancing femininity and empowerment.

His later years were spent in Miami, where he found personal and creative refuge. The exhibition in Málaga reflects the influence of Miami’s vibrant culture on his work. Tragically, Versace was murdered in 1997, but his legacy endures through his sister Donatella, who has continued to lead the brand.

The Málaga exhibition features over 500 original pieces, including 120 iconic looks, organized into nine rooms that represent different phases of Versace's career. Highlights include outfits worn by Madonna and Elton John, showcasing the essence of baroque Italian style and punk culture.

Versace's collections mirrored his travels and the cultural evolution of his time, making him a universal icon. The retrospective offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the vibrancy of a designer whose influence persists in contemporary fashion and popular culture.
