Spain's Casa Gomis to Become Cultural Center

Plans are underway to conserve Casa Gomis, a notable architectural gem designed by Antonio Bonet Castellana, located near Barcelona, Spain. Acquired by Spain's Ministry of Culture for over €7.2 million ($7.4 million), the villa will be transformed into a cultural center open to the public.

Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun emphasized the center's theme will focus on the dialogue between art and nature, highlighting Casa Gomis as a prime example of modernist architecture harmonizing with its environment. Completed in 1963, the single-story home showcases Bonet's innovative design, featuring curved arches and extensive windows that connect indoor and outdoor spaces.

Originally commissioned in 1953, the villa served as both a family residence and social hub, hosting performances from notable musicians. Despite restoration efforts in the 1990s, the house faced challenges, including pollution from nearby Barcelona Airport. Its recent designation as a Cultural Asset of National Interest and the Ministry's acquisition aim to ensure its preservation.

Future plans include guided tours and activities for visitors, with the villa expected to play a role in the World Capital of Architecture events in Barcelona in 2026. Casa Gomis is now recognized among the world's most significant architectural sites, marking a pivotal moment for cultural heritage in Spain.
