Tropical Storm Trami Hits Vietnam

Tropical storm Trami, the sixth storm to impact the East Vietnam Sea this year, resulted in at least four fatalities and significant damage to public infrastructure and homes after making landfall in central Vietnam on October 28, 2024.

In Thua Thien Hue Province, a male motorcyclist was swept away while navigating a flooded road, and a 44-year-old man drowned while fishing near his residence. Both bodies were recovered on the same day.

Quang Nam Province reported the death of a man over 60 who fell from a ladder while securing his roof. Additionally, three individuals sustained serious injuries while reinforcing their homes in anticipation of the storm, as confirmed by local authorities.

In Quang Binh Province, the body of 22-year-old Le Ngoc Hon was retrieved after he drowned while attempting to assist flood-affected residents. Hon, who had completed military service a year prior, was remembered by neighbors for his kindness and willingness to help.

Record-high tides in Quang Tri Province caused severe damage to aquaculture, breaching embankments and destroying numerous snail farms. Approximately 10 households reported losses ranging from VND100 million (US$3,900) to over VND1 billion ($39,300), with damaged snails sold at half their usual price.

Heavy rainfall also flooded sections of the north-south railway line, stranding trains at Dong Hoi and Dong Ha Stations. To facilitate travel, railway authorities arranged free buses for 321 affected passengers.

In Da Nang City, floodwaters and debris ravaged 800 meters of Nhu Nguyet Street, damaging sidewalks and streetlight poles. As of Monday morning, storm Trami had damaged or removed roofs from 295 houses and flooded nearly 15,200 homes in the region.

Additionally, 431 hectares of crops and fruit trees were submerged, over 1,000 urban trees were uprooted, and 71 livestock were lost to the floods. Transportation infrastructure suffered as well, with landslides reported at 37 locations on National Highway 9B and Ho Chi Minh Highway.

After making landfall, Trami weakened into a tropical depression, bringing heavy rains to the central region, with total rainfall reaching between 150mm to 250mm, and exceeding 400mm in some areas. Further rainfall of 30-60mm is expected in the coming days, with warnings of landslides and flash flooding in low-lying areas.
