The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for "extremely heavy rainfall" across Tamil Nadu, significantly impacting Chennai and surrounding districts. In response to the severe weather conditions, numerous train, flight, and bus services have been canceled or diverted. The Tamil Nadu government has declared October 16 a public holiday, activating disaster management teams.
Forecasts indicate heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai. The weather disturbances are attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.
On October 16, the IMD predicted "heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two locations" in the affected districts. Consequently, the government has suspended classes and operations in schools, colleges, and government offices, except for essential services, across the impacted areas.
Rail services have faced significant disruptions due to flooding in various parts of Chennai, resulting in the cancellation of four express trains, including the Chennai-Central-Mysuru-Kaveri Express. Domestic flights have also been affected, as many passengers chose not to travel.
Disaster response teams, comprising 219 units and boats, have been deployed to Chennai and surrounding districts. Relief centers are operational, and officials are actively monitoring the situation to manage waterlogging and ensure public safety.
Chennai has experienced heavy rains leading to flooded roads and obstructed traffic. Efforts are underway to remove water and clear fallen trees. The Chennai Corporation has established a helpline to assist residents and has advised them to stay informed via the TN Alert app.
The IMD anticipates further rainfall in the upcoming days, with squally winds expected to reach speeds of 40-50 km/h along the north coast of Tamil Nadu. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea during this period.
