Heineken to Plant 19 Microforests Across Brazil by 2030

In a significant environmental initiative, Heineken has committed to planting 19 microforests across Brazil by 2030, starting with a new microforest of 1,105 native trees in Belo Horizonte. This project, in collaboration with the city’s government and landscape architect Ricardo Cardim, aims to restore the Atlantic Forest biome in urban areas.

The newly established microforest covers approximately 1,000 square meters and features 90 native species. This innovative approach, known as the 'Pocket Forest' methodology, focuses on creating smaller, sustainable green spaces that can thrive in urban settings. Cardim emphasized that the arrangement of the trees is crucial for their growth and ecological balance, allowing them to flourish with minimal maintenance.

This initiative is part of Heineken's 'Green Your City' platform, which was launched in 2021. The first microforest was planted at the Rock in Rio festival in 2022, followed by another in São Paulo in 2023. The project not only aims to enhance local biodiversity but also offers numerous environmental benefits, including improved air quality, reduced urban heat, and decreased noise pollution.

As urban areas face increasing environmental challenges, the establishment of these microforests represents a proactive step towards ecological restoration and community well-being. The project seeks to not only compensate for the environmental impact of the brewing industry but also inspire other companies to adopt sustainable practices.
