Canary Islands Launches Photography Contest to Highlight Unique Flora and Fauna of La Orotava Botanical Garden

The Government of the Canary Islands has initiated the eighth edition of the photography contest "Apúntate al JAO" to showcase the natural and cultural wealth of the La Orotava Botanical Garden, also known as the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava. This initiative aims to promote the garden's unique botanical heritage, which hosts over a thousand natural species, many of which are tropical and subtropical.

During the launch event on November 21, 2024, Narvay Quintero, the Minister of Agriculture, highlighted the garden's potential as a living museum, not only for its biodiversity but also as a resource for tourism, education, and scientific research. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about this valuable ecological site, especially in light of the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

Luis Perera, the Environment Councillor of La Orotava, noted that the contest serves to elevate the garden's cultural and ecological significance, while David Hernández Díaz, the Deputy Mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, echoed the sentiment by underscoring the city's rich natural heritage.

The contest invites participants from around the world to submit original photographs that capture the essence of the garden and its Hijuela. The entries will be judged by a panel including botanical experts and representatives from local government and the airline Binter, which supports the initiative.

Winners will be announced on January 14, 2025, with the first prize offering a round trip for two to an international destination. The contest not only aims to promote the garden but also to engage the public in appreciating the vital role of flora and fauna in our ecosystems.
