Tesla began production at its new Shanghai battery factory on Tuesday, manufacturing Megapacks for energy storage. Construction started in late May 2024, aiming for completion before year-end. The factory will produce approximately 10,000 Megapack units annually, enough to power 50,000 homes. Tesla invested 1.45 billion yuan (€193 million) in the 200,000-square-meter facility. Each Megapack stores over three MWh, powering 3,600 homes for one hour. Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory produced 947,000 vehicles in 2023, over half of Tesla's global sales.
