Trump Claims Control Over Musk's Government Efficiency Efforts

US President Donald Trump has asserted direct oversight over Elon Musk's efforts to streamline government operations, stating that Musk cannot take any action without his approval.

Trump emphasized that Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is subject to his direct control, particularly regarding personnel decisions. "Elon has got access only to letting people go that he thinks are no good if we agree with him, and it's only if we agree with him. Elon can't do and won't do anything without our approval," Trump stated.

Trump's comments come amidst concerns over the level of authority granted to DOGE, following Musk's dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Trump clarified that Musk would not be allowed access to areas where conflicts exist, adding, "And we'll give him the approval where appropriate, and where not appropriate, we won't; where we think there's a conflict, we won't let him go near it."

Musk, who initially sought volunteers for DOGE without pay, now finds his department integrated into the government, raising questions about staff compensation and potential conflicts of interest.

Democratic lawmakers have voiced opposition to Musk's involvement in government affairs, citing concerns about his power and the potential for disruption. Representative Jamie Raskin stated, "We don't have a fourth branch of government called Elon Musk, and that's going to become real clear."

Meanwhile, a coalition of labor unions has filed a lawsuit against the Treasury Department, alleging that the transfer of information to DOGE was unlawful and violated federal privacy protections.
