Rare 1958 BMW 507 Roadster Set for Auction in Paris

A stunning 1958 BMW 507 Roadster Series II is set to be auctioned by RM Sotheby's in Paris next month. Nearly seven decades after its debut, this sleek two-door remains one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced by the German luxury brand.

The 507 was born from American car importer Max Hoffman's vision, who believed there was a market for a convertible version of BMW's 501 and 502 coupes. Although the plan aimed to produce thousands annually for the U.S. market, high costs limited production to just 252 units between 1956 and 1959.

Despite its commercial struggles, the 507 is regarded as a masterpiece of post-war automotive design, featuring elegant lines and proportions crafted by designer Albrecht von Goertz. It’s not just a pretty face; the roadster boasts a 3.2-liter V-8 engine that delivers 150 hp, achieving a top speed of 122 mph. Its influence is evident in BMW's modern Z8 model.

The specific model going under the hammer, chassis no. 70136, originally left the factory in Ivory White and was shipped to Havana. After three decades in Cuba, it returned to Germany in the late 1980s, where it underwent a meticulous restoration and was repainted black. The interior features spacious grey leather seats, and while the engine isn’t the original, it still retains its vintage charm.

Expected to fetch between $1.8 million and $2.1 million, the 507 Roadster will be part of RM Sotheby's Paris sale on February 4 and 5, highlighting its rarity and pristine condition.
