Marie Antoinette's Jewel Up for $2.8M

A stunning 18th-century diamond necklace, possibly linked to former French queen consort Marie Antoinette, is set to go under the hammer in Geneva this November, with an estimated price of up to $2.8 million.

Weighing approximately 300 carats and featuring three rows of diamonds with tassels, this rare piece was crafted just before the 1789 French Revolution. It last appeared in public in 1973 before being sold into a private collection. The necklace will be the highlight of Sotheby's 'Royal & Noble Jewels' auction on November 11.

Displayed for the first time in 50 years at Sotheby's London showrooms, the jewel's historical significance is profound. Andres White Correal, Chairman of Sotheby's Royal and Noble Sales, noted that such an intact 18th-century jewel is exceptionally rare, especially since many were repurposed after the Golconda diamond mines in India became depleted.

This necklace is believed to have connections to the notorious 'Affair of the Diamond Necklace,' which marred Marie Antoinette's reputation. Previously owned by the Marquesses of Anglesey, it has been worn during significant royal events, including the coronations of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.

The upcoming auction reflects the enduring allure of royal history and the high value placed on extraordinary jewelry.
