Earthquake Swarm Prompts Travel Warning for Greek Islands: Santorini and Amorgos Declare State of Emergency Amid Seismic Unrest

A series of earthquakes in the southeastern Aegean Sea has led to a state of emergency being declared on the Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos. This follows an unusual number of tremors detected near these islands, as well as Ios and Anafi, since late January. The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance for the Cycladic islands, warning of frequent earthquakes that may continue for several weeks. Travelers are advised to avoid large indoor gatherings, old buildings, and specific ports, and to choose safe routes, especially in areas with high landslide risk. In the event of a strong tremor, immediate departure from coastal areas is advised. Since January 26, approximately 12,000 earthquakes with magnitudes greater than one have been recorded. While Greece is located in a seismically active region, such a prolonged and intense series of tremors is highly unusual, prompting increased vigilance and safety measures for both residents and tourists.
