On December 8, 2024, the United States government announced a new military aid package valued at $988 million for Ukraine. This assistance includes drones, tanks, munitions for rocket launch systems, equipment, and spare parts for artillery systems.
The U.S. Department of Defense stated that this support is part of Washington's continued backing of Ukraine in its conflict with Russian forces. The United States is recognized as the largest supporter of Ukraine in this ongoing war.
However, the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed critical views regarding the multi-billion dollar aid to the Ukrainian military. This latest package marks the 22nd round of military assistance provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
In addition to the recent aid announcement, the U.S. Defense Department confirmed on December 2, 2024, a separate military assistance package estimated at $725 million. The Guardian reported that the Biden administration developed a strategy to bolster Ukraine's military position, which includes extensive military aid and new sanctions against Russia.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan assured Ukrainian officials of substantial additional munitions, rockets, and armored vehicles to be delivered by mid-January, prior to the inauguration of the newly elected president.
