UK Parliament to Vote on Assisted Dying Legislation for Terminally Ill Patients

On November 29, 2024, UK Members of Parliament will conduct a significant vote regarding assisted dying. The proposed legislation, introduced by Labour Party backbencher Kim Leadbeater, seeks to permit terminally ill individuals with a prognosis of less than six months to live the option to end their lives.

The bill stipulates that the option for assisted dying would be available only to adults diagnosed with a terminal illness. Additionally, the process requires approval from two doctors and a high court judge. This framework is closely aligned with the model established in the US state of Oregon, where the lethal medication must be self-administered.
