Ukrainian Foreign Minister Meets Hungarian Counterpart to Discuss EU and NATO Integration

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest on September 30, 2024, to enhance bilateral relations and discuss Ukraine's integration into the European Union (EU) and NATO.

The meeting, held at the directive of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, focuses on economic project development, improving border infrastructure, and protecting minority rights. Additionally, the agenda includes discussions on Ukraine's integration into the EU and NATO and the implementation of a 'peace formula' proposed by Ukraine to end Russian aggression.

This visit is described by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry as an important step in Sybiha's first regional tour aimed at strengthening good-neighborly relations and advancing Ukraine's path toward EU and NATO membership.

Previously, Hungary joined discussions on a Chinese-Brazilian 'peace plan' for Ukraine, which drew criticism from EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who remarked on Budapest's capitulatory thinking regarding peace talks.

On September 27, during the UN General Assembly, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian presidential advisor Celso Amorim gathered 17 countries to discuss a new 'plan for ending the war in Ukraine.' The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has urged that no agreements about Ukraine should be made without Ukraine's involvement, asserting that President Zelenskyy's 'peace formula' is the only viable path to a just conclusion of the war.
