UK Government Invests £20 Million to Boost Orbex Rocket Launch Capabilities from British Soil

The UK government has announced a £20 million investment aimed at establishing a regular orbital launch capability from UK soil, as stated by Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, at the 17th European Space Conference in Brussels. This initiative is designed to enhance the UK’s space industry by leveraging domestically manufactured rockets and attracting global investment.

Orbex, the only UK-owned launch services provider, is developing small and medium-sized space rockets, with initial launch operations planned from SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland. The Secretary emphasized Britain's potential to lead in the new space revolution in Europe, citing the country's scientific talent, facilities, and unique geography.

Kyle stated, “By investing in this rocket launch, we are not only positioning the UK as a leading destination for small satellite launches in Europe but also creating skilled jobs and investment opportunities across the country.” He noted that supporting Orbex’s launch will enhance the UK’s standing in the space sector and inspire future space professionals.

Orbex is currently testing its Prime rocket, a 19-meter, two-stage vehicle designed for small satellite delivery to Low Earth Orbit, with the first launch expected by late 2025. The new funding will expedite development efforts.

CEO Phillip Chambers remarked that this investment reflects the UK government's confidence in the nation’s rocket manufacturing and launch sector. He highlighted that the funding will facilitate the launch of their first rocket this year and the development of a larger rocket to compete in the European Launcher Challenge.

The investment comes from various sources, including the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), Octopus Ventures, and private investor Sohaib Abbasi, bringing the total funding to £23 million. EIFO’s CIO Erik Balck Sorensen expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration to build European launch capacity in Scotland.

Orbex holds two active patents related to its technology and focuses on sustainability, with its Prime rocket powered by bio-propane, a renewable fuel that significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to similar rockets. Chambers concluded that the Series D funding round remains open for further investment opportunities.
