ESA Astronaut Cadets Complete Intensive Training, Preparing for Future Space Missions

The first group of ESA astronaut cadets has completed two months of intensive Astronaut Cadet Training (ART). During this initial training phase, ESA astronaut cadets Sara García Alonso from Spain, Andrea Patassa from Italy, Arnaud Prost from France, Amelie Schoenenwald from Germany, and Aleš Svoboda from the Czech Republic were introduced to essential skills necessary for future space exploration and scientific research.

These reserve astronauts were selected from 22,500 applicants across ESA member states, following the 2022 ESA astronaut selection, which included a class of five professional astronauts and 12 reserve members. Their training commenced in October 2024 at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany.

The ART program is built on modules from ESA's basic astronaut training, equipping participants with foundational technical and operational knowledge for space missions and preparing them for rapid entry into specific mission training when required. Throughout the program, this first group gained solid knowledge in spacecraft systems, flight techniques, robotics, and life support systems, forming the technical backbone of their training.

A highlight of their training was an introduction to spacewalks. In ESA's Neutral-Buoyancy Facility, these reserve astronauts practiced diving to simulate the weightlessness of microgravity. These sessions provided an introduction to tasks such as performing repairs or installing equipment, offering insights into the skills necessary for operations on the International Space Station or future lunar exploration.

Another focus was scientific preparation. The group completed foundational courses in biology and laboratory techniques to be equipped for conducting experiments in space. They also participated in physical fitness programs and public engagement activities, supporting ESA's mission to inspire and educate.
