Proposed £50m Battery Project in Scotland

November 1, 2024, Scotland - A proposed £50 million battery energy storage facility near Milton Farm, Beattock, aims for operational status by 2027, pending approval from Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Renewco Power presented updates to the Moffat Community Council, stating the facility will deliver renewable, dispatchable power, replacing fossil fuels. A full charge is projected to supply energy for approximately 20,000 homes for one day.

Senior developer William Black emphasized the ability to charge from the grid using wind or solar energy, allowing for local energy release when needed. The project has revised plans, reducing units from 52 to 44 while maintaining a capacity of 49.9 MWac (megawatt alternating current).

Environmental surveys indicated no adverse impacts on ecology, noise, flooding, or cultural heritage. Construction is estimated to take eight months, with access via the C103A route.

Next steps include awaiting planning recommendations from the local authority, with hopes for site work to commence by 2026.
