US Launches Cyber Trust Mark for Smart Devices

The White House has announced the launch of the Cyber Trust Mark, a new cybersecurity label for internet-connected devices such as smart thermostats, baby monitors, and app-controlled lights. This initiative aims to provide consumers with a straightforward way to evaluate the security of these products, similar to USDA food labels or Energy Star ratings.

The Cyber Trust Mark, featuring a stylized shield logo, will be available for companies that meet cybersecurity criteria established by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. With an increasing number of everyday devices connecting to the internet, the initiative addresses the growing risks associated with these conveniences.

While the label is voluntary, US Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber Anne Neuberger expressed hope that consumers will demand it, prioritizing their privacy and security. The program will initially focus on consumer devices, with plans to expand to routers and smart meters. Certified products are expected to hit the market this year.

Additionally, an executive order is in the works that would restrict the US government to purchasing only Cyber Trust Mark products by 2027, a move that has garnered bipartisan support.
