Record Heat in Delhi, November 2024

New Delhi: November has commenced, yet record heat persists across India, with the exception of some hilly regions. Residents in the Delhi-NCR area are struggling to cope without air conditioning or fans, as the expected drop in temperatures remains absent. Historically, November heralded the onset of cooler weather; however, this year, the heat continues unabated.

The Meteorological Department reported unprecedented temperatures this October, making it the hottest month on record nationwide. In Delhi, temperatures soared to 35.1 degrees Celsius, breaking a 73-year record. The previous high of 36.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in 1951.

Climate scientists express concern regarding this weather anomaly, attributing the unusual warmth to the absence of Western Disturbances, which typically bring cooler air. This year, intense sunshine has led to significant temperature increases throughout October. The Meteorological Department anticipates a potential drop in temperatures in the Delhi-NCR region after November 10.

Additionally, pollution exacerbates the discomfort for Delhi residents, with many experiencing respiratory issues and eye irritation. Despite a ban on firecrackers during Diwali, significant fireworks displays occurred, contributing to the dense smog covering various areas of the capital.
