The Urban Trails project at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) has been recognized as an exemplary initiative for promoting environmental education in botanical gardens. This project was awarded the prestigious Helena Quadros Prize, which honors efforts to enhance socio-environmental education, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Leonardo Chaves, the director of Sustainable Development at UFMS, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the collective effort behind the initiative. The project aims to raise awareness about local biodiversity in the University City, a region rich in flora and fauna.

Helena Quadros, in whose memory the award is named, was a pivotal figure in environmental education, particularly in the northern regions of Brazil. The award highlights the importance of scientific dissemination and community engagement in biodiversity conservation.

Since its inception in 2019, the initiative has evolved to include guided trails led by experts in various fields, making it accessible to all age groups, from children to seniors. The project has successfully fostered a greater appreciation for the natural environment among participants.

The UFMS Botanical Garden, established earlier this year, aims to protect and study the biodiversity of the campus and its surroundings. Recent activities include the planting of 220 palm seeds from the Cerrado biome, received from the Inhotim Botanical Garden, showcasing the university's commitment to conservation and sustainability.

As part of Brazil's diverse ecosystems, the UFMS Botanical Garden serves as a vital resource for both educational purposes and community engagement, contributing to the preservation of the region's unique biodiversity.
