Severe Wildfires Threaten Biodiversity in Piura, Peru

The Piura region of Peru is facing a severe environmental emergency due to the reactivation of multiple wildfires across various districts in Huancabamba province. These fires have devastated extensive areas of forests, grasslands, and agricultural land, endangering both biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.

In the Huarmaca district, the wildfire has impacted the villages of San Isidro, Cedro, Parguyuc, and Hierba Buena. Currently, the fire is 95% contained thanks to the joint efforts of residents and Civil Defense personnel. However, the rugged terrain complicates complete extinguishment, prompting ongoing monitoring by the population to prevent a potential flare-up.

In Huancabamba, two wildfires keep communities on high alert. One originated in the Los Lirios settlement and has rapidly spread towards Calderón and La Laguna, destroying dozens of hectares of grasslands due to strong winds. Another fire in Sondorillo is affecting forests and cropland.

In response to this situation, the Regional Government of Piura has dispatched tools and protective equipment to assist firefighters and community members in constructing firebreaks.

Beyond destroying hectares of pine forests, the wildfires are harming wildlife and disrupting local ecosystems. Preliminary reports indicate that inappropriate agricultural practices, such as burning weeds without adequate precautions, may be contributing factors.

The Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) of Piura is continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating actions with district municipalities and affected communities. Gonzalo Flores Lozano, head of the Regional Office of Security and National Defense, emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to contain these fires, as uncontrolled, they could cause irreversible damage to the environment and the region's economy.

Regional authorities urge the public to reinforce precautionary measures and avoid activities that could spark new fires. Citizens are also encouraged to report any signs of fire immediately to respond quickly and minimize damage.
