Honduras Faces Tropical Wave Threat, Oct 27, 2024

Honduras is bracing for variable rainfall and isolated thunderstorms this Sunday, particularly affecting the northern, northwestern, and central regions, according to forecaster Mario Centeno. Light precipitation is expected in other areas, except for the south and southwest where dry conditions will prevail.

Wave heights along the Caribbean coast and in the Gulf of Fonseca are predicted to remain between 1 and 3 feet, as reported by the Center for Atmospheric, Oceanographic, and Seismic Studies (Cenaos).

Temperature variations are anticipated across the country. In Tegucigalpa, the capital, maximum temperatures are forecasted to reach 27°C with a minimum of 18°C. The northern region is expected to see temperatures between 23°C and 30°C, while central areas will range from 18°C to 30°C.

In the south, maximum temperatures could rise to 34°C, with a minimum of 24°C. The western part of the country will experience temperatures from 14°C to 27°C, while island areas are predicted to range between 27°C and 31°C. Eastern Honduras may see highs of 32°C and lows of 21°C.

Cenaos is also monitoring a tropical wave and a cold front that could lead to increased rainfall in the coming days. Francisco Argeñal, the institution's director, noted that the tropical wave exhibits characteristics that could potentially develop into a cyclone.

Argeñal warned that the arrival of a cold air mass could hinder the tropical wave's progression, a situation that has previously impacted Honduras. This phenomenon raises concerns among meteorological authorities.

The director expressed particular worry about the increasing destructive power of hurricanes and their rapid formation, attributing these trends to climate change effects.

Finally, Argeñal urged the public, especially those living in high-risk areas, to remain vigilant and prepared for potential climatic emergencies in the coming days.
