Fishermen Rescue Dugong in Tamil Nadu

A group of fishermen in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, successfully rescued a dugong, a marine mammal known as the 'sea cow', that was stranded in fishing nets. The incident occurred near Keezhathottam village at around 5 AM.

The dugong, estimated to be about eight feet long and weighing between 700 and 800 kilograms, was freed and released back into the sea. Local fishermen, led by boat owner Chelladurai, contacted the Pattukottai Forest Range officials, who guided them through the rescue process.

Authorities believe the dugong is approximately 50-60 years old. Tamil Nadu's Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, Supriya Sahu, shared a video of the rescue on social media, highlighting the role of community members in wildlife conservation. The video garnered widespread attention, with many praising the fishermen's efforts.

Dugongs are classified as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List and are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act in India. They play a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems by feeding on seagrass.

Recognizing the need for conservation, the Tamil Nadu government established the first Dugong Conservation Reserve in Palk Bay, covering approximately 448 square kilometers. Over the past two years, officials have conducted awareness campaigns in about 53 coastal villages, educating local fishermen on the importance of dugongs and safe rescue practices for entangled marine mammals.
