FTC Launches Antitrust Investigation into Microsoft’s Cloud and AI Practices

Washington, D.C. – December 2, 2024 – The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated a comprehensive antitrust investigation into Microsoft, focusing on its cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity sectors.

The investigation examines whether Microsoft has violated antitrust laws by bundling its cloud services with office and security tools. This inquiry expands on previous scrutiny of the company’s business practices.

This action is part of FTC Chair Lina Khan's ongoing campaign against monopolistic behavior in the tech industry. The agency previously faced a setback when a federal judge allowed Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As the investigation progresses, it will be contingent on the incoming Trump administration's FTC leadership decision to continue legal proceedings. Analysts suggest a potential shift towards a less aggressive regulatory approach under the new administration.

Microsoft has not issued any comments regarding the investigation, which was first reported by Bloomberg News.
