Global Grain Production: Record Harvest Expected in 2025-2026

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The International Grains Council (IGC) projects a record global grain production of 2,375 million tonnes for the 2025-2026 marketing year. This includes wheat, maize, and other cereals. The report was published on May 22, 2025.

The IGC's projections have increased by 2 million tonnes compared to April estimates. This is due to favorable conditions. However, dry conditions in East Asia have slightly reduced yield potential.

Global grain consumption is slightly down to 2,372 million tonnes, mainly due to reduced animal feed estimates. End-of-season stocks for 2025-2026 are revised upwards by 4 million tonnes, reaching 585 million tonnes. Maize production is expected to reach 1,277 million tonnes.

The IGC highlights production gains in the European Union. Production is also expected to increase in Argentina and the United States. Consumption is projected to be 2% higher than the previous year.

The IGC estimates end-of-season grain stocks for 2024-2025 at 581 million tonnes, among the lowest in a decade. Global production for 2024-2025 is revised upwards by 7 million tonnes to 2,310 million tonnes. This increase is mainly due to maize in Brazil and wheat in Iran.

Soybean consumption is expected to reach a peak in the 2024-2025 campaign. For 2025-2026, soybean stocks might tighten slightly more than previously anticipated. Production is expected to remain stable, while consumption is expected to increase slightly.

The IGC reduced its end-of-season stock forecasts for soybeans by 2 million tonnes. They highlight stronger demand in animal feed, human consumption, and industrial sectors for the 2025-2026 marketing year. These factors will impact global trade and food security.
