Egypt has announced plans to construct a new desert city named Jirana. The project will divert approximately 7% of the Nile's water from the delta. This water will support high-end homes and a large agricultural project.
The city is part of Egypt's Nile Delta scheme. This is an ambitious agricultural initiative aiming to revitalize approximately 2.5 million acres of land. The project is located west of the original Nile Delta.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated the project will increase the country's assets and land prices. It will also create 250,000 jobs. The project will serve as a cornerstone for a larger development zone.
Approximately 10 million cubic meters of Nile water will flow into the city. The city is located 42 km west of Cairo. This will help irrigate 2.28 million acres of the New Delta agricultural project.
The project will include luxury residences, skyscrapers, universities, and hospitals. It will also feature a hotel, shopping centers, a yacht port, and a free economic zone. Construction began five months ago and is expected to be completed within five years.
