United Nations, May 12, 2025 – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Miguel Angel Moratinos as the UN Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia.

Moratinos, former foreign minister of Spain, will also continue his role as the High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). This dual role aims to optimize resources and integrate the new mandate.

The appointment follows a UN General Assembly resolution, initiated by Pakistan, calling for action against anti-Muslim hate. The Assembly also designated March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
