Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On Wednesday, Chile and Google signed a historic agreement to install the first undersea fiber optic cable connecting South America, Asia, and Oceania. The project, named "Project Humboldt," is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The 14,800-kilometer cable will run from Valparaiso, Chile, to Sydney, Australia, passing through French Polynesia. This initiative aims to provide faster internet connectivity and diversify digital pathways.

Other South American countries, including Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, are also expected to benefit from the project. The cable will have a transmission capacity of 144 terabytes per second and an estimated lifespan of 25 years. Google has invested between $300 and $550 million, with the Chilean government contributing $25 million.
