European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a pledge of €500 million in research funding. The funding aims to attract scientists to Europe, particularly those facing cuts in the US. The package, for 2025-27, intends to make Europe a magnet for researchers. Von der Leyen highlighted Europe's stable investment, infrastructure, and commitment to open research. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the science policies of Donald Trump. Macron has also appealed to foreign researchers to choose France. Several European institutions have already made efforts to attract US academic talent. Applications from the US to Germany's Max Planck Society have significantly increased.
