X, formerly Twitter, has launched XChat, a new direct message (DM) feature in June 2025. Some subscribers are accessing it through a beta version. XChat aims to be a more robust and secure version of the existing DM feature.
XChat includes advanced group chats and a Vanishing Mode, which automatically deletes messages after they've been read. The new messaging service is built on the Rust programming language and boasts Bitcoin-style encryption, offering enhanced privacy. Other key features include file sharing and audio/video calling.
Elon Musk has indicated that XChat is part of his vision to transform X into an "everything app," similar to WeChat. This launch follows a temporary pause of encrypted DMs on X as the company works on improvements. XChat is currently rolling out to paid subscribers.
