Carl Virgil "Tinker" West, a pivotal figure in Bruce Springsteen's formative years, passed away recently at the age of 89. West, a surfboard shaper and sound engineer, provided crucial support to the aspiring musician in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
Recognizing the need for original music, West offered rent-free rehearsal space, leading to the formation of Steel Mill with Springsteen, Vini Lopez, Danny Federici, and Steven Van Zandt. West became their first manager and sound man, connecting the surfing community with the burgeoning musicians. He managed Springsteen's early groups from March 1969 until February 1972.
Eileen Chapman of the Bruce Springsteen Archives affirmed West's critical role, noting he nurtured the band, booked gigs, and even drove them across the country. Springsteen shared a heartfelt tribute on May 27, 2025, emphasizing West's profound influence on his life and career, calling him "one of the most important people of my young life."
