Big Country's Evolution: New Members, Same Sound

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

Big Country, the iconic Scottish band, is set to headline the "Totally '80s" tour. The tour will feature performances at Tupelo Music Hall in Derry, N.H. on June 19, alongside Tommy Tutone, Bow Wow Wow, and Gene Loves Jezebel.

Significant changes have occurred since their last Boston performance in 2013. The band has seen the departure of its rhythm section and multiple singers. Bruce Watson, the guitarist and leader, has rebuilt the lineup with new members.

The current lineup includes singer Tommie Paxton, bassist Chris Stones, and drummer Reece Dobbin, along with Jamie Watson on guitar. Watson emphasizes that the band's sound remains true to its original recordings, now enhanced by the ability to reproduce overdubs and harmonies.

Big Country's distinctive sound, characterized by its bagpipe-like guitar melodies, is a key element of their music. Watson explains that the band aimed to remove blues influences, drawing inspiration from bands like Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, and Wishbone Ash.

The band continues to honor the legacy of Stuart Adamson, the late founder. Watson acknowledges Adamson's impact, noting the honesty and depth in his songwriting, which often paired uplifting music with introspective lyrics.
