Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has shared her perspective on her daughter Malia's decision to use her middle name, Ann, for professional projects. This move, which was first seen in the credits of a short film Malia wrote and directed that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024, reflects a desire for independence and to establish her own identity.

Speaking on the "Sibling Revelry" podcast, Michelle Obama explained that her daughters, Malia and Sasha, went through a phase in their teenage years where they sought to differentiate themselves. She emphasized the importance of her daughters feeling they have earned their achievements and not wanting to be perceived as simply benefiting from their family name.

Michelle Obama and Barack Obama respect Malia's choice, understanding her desire to forge her own path. Barack Obama echoed this sentiment on "The Pivot Podcast," revealing that Malia wanted viewers to experience her work without any preconceived associations. The Obamas' production company, Higher Ground, has also been active, including a $65 million deal with Netflix.

Michelle also addressed divorce rumors, which circulated due to her absence from certain high-profile events. She highlighted societal pressures on women and the tendency to misinterpret their choices. She emphasized the strength of her partnership with Barack, stating that neither would give up on their relationship. Michelle also has her own business, Plezi, a healthy soda company, and recently promoted it at a Costco in Northern California.
