Pedro Pinho's 'I Only Rest in the Storm,' showcased in the Un Certain Regard category at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival running from May 13th to 24th, delves into themes of neo-colonialism. The film, which was shot over six months in West Africa, examines identity and transformation through its characters and setting.

Set in Guinea-Bissau, the film centers on Sergio, a Portuguese environmental engineer tasked with assessing the ecological impact of a new road. Sergio's interactions with Diara and Guilherme, two locals, highlight the complexities of neo-colonial relationships. The film avoids being overly didactic, focusing instead on the characters' desires and relationships.

'I Only Rest in the Storm' explores cinema's role in reflecting on modern colonialism. The film utilizes landscapes and intense character reflections to explore these themes. The Un Certain Regard section aims to highlight new trends and cinematic voices, with Tunisian director Erige Sehiri's “Promised Sky” opening the section on May 14th, 2025.
