Southern France is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding following torrential rains and thunderstorms. The extreme weather event, which struck the Var region on Tuesday, has resulted in at least three fatalities and two missing individuals.
The intense rainfall inundated streets, causing widespread power and water outages and significant devastation. Hundreds of rescuers have been deployed to the affected areas, known for their typically sunny climate.
Among the casualties were an elderly couple whose car was swept away by floodwaters in Le Lavandou. Another person drowned in their vehicle in Vidauban. Local officials described the scenes as resembling "scenes of war," with extensive damage to infrastructure.
Power and water outages were reported in Cavaliere, where 250mm of rain fell within an hour. A parking lot collapse prompted numerous rescues. The region remains under orange alert for rain, flooding, and thunderstorms.
