In 2024, the Animal Protection Brigade (BVA) in Mexico City conducted a significant operation, rescuing hundreds of animals from abuse. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Citizen Security (SSC), highlighted the variety of species in need of protection.
Statistics of Rescued Animals:
137 dogs
127 cats
3 eagles and 1 owl
10 ringtails (North American raccoons)
1 alligator and 1 crocodile
2 bulls and 1 calf
3 horses and 3 snakes
1 peacock, 1 wild boar, 1 toucan, 1 quetzal, and 1 wolf
Among these, 103 dogs and 35 cats have found new homes through adoption programs.
New Facilities for Animal Care:
In 2023, SSC opened three new facilities funded by a 14 million pesos (approximately $683,000 USD) donation from the Antonio Haghenbeck y de la Lama Foundation. These facilities, named Michigan, City of Cats, and Wild Expanse, began operations in September:
The "Michigan" center includes medical areas, consultation rooms, and quarantine spaces.
The "Wild Expanse" offers operating rooms, stables, enclosures, and cages for various species.
Partnerships and Campaigns:
BVA collaborated with the Attorney General's Office to conduct 178 inspections, ensuring proper care for animals in temporary shelters.
Strategies for the welfare of dogs and cats include:
Sterilization, vaccination, and deworming campaigns.
Monthly Adoptatón adoption events.
A new veterinary hospital and 20 clinics in community centers across the city.
These efforts demonstrate Mexico City's commitment to animal protection, providing rescued animals with better conditions and a second chance at life.
