U.S. Uranium Production Faces Challenges Amidst Rising Demand

Edited by: Olga Sukhina

The United States, once a leader in uranium mining, now imports over 95% of its uranium feedstock.

This shift is due to factors like the de-prioritization of uranium and the impact of nuclear accidents.

However, increasing electricity demand, driven by AI and a push for cleaner energy, is boosting the need for nuclear power and, consequently, uranium.

Experts predict that known uranium deposits may be depleted by 2080 if demand continues to grow.

The U.S. government has provided support, including banning Russian uranium imports and allocating funds for domestic expansion.

Despite these efforts, the U.S. will likely remain reliant on other countries for uranium due to limited domestic reserves.
