KZN South Coast Gears Up for the 2025 Sardine Run: A Spectacle of Marine Migration

Edited by: Елена 11

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast is preparing for the annual Sardine Run, a remarkable natural event that transforms the coastline into a marine paradise. Known as 'the planet's greatest biomass migration,' this phenomenon involves millions of sardines migrating close to the shore, attracting a multitude of predators and offering exceptional viewing opportunities. According to Dr. Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), the Sardine Run significantly boosts tourism, making the KZN South Coast a prime destination. The migration, typically occurring between May and July, is often signaled by the blooming of aloes, marking the start of the winter season. The KZN Sharks Board is monitoring the sardine activity. There have been sightings of bait fish attracting Bryde's whales and Orcas near Port Alfred. Common dolphins and whales have also been observed feeding near Jeffrey's Bay, suggesting the Sardine Run is approaching. There are several ways to experience the Sardine Run along the KZN South Coast:

  • Charter Boat Expeditions: Anglers can join expeditions for fishing opportunities.

  • Diving: Explore underwater action at dive sites like Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, both Marine Protected Areas.

  • Shore Viewing: The 58 beaches and whale viewing decks offer vantage points to witness the spectacle.

  • Aerial Tours: Book microlight, helicopter, or light aircraft flights for a bird's-eye view.

  • Photography: Capture images of bait balls, whales, and diving gannets.

Visitors can also enjoy the Sardine Run from restaurants, seaside cafes, and bars, with some chefs incorporating sardines into local cuisine. Early bookings are essential due to limited availability for charters and accommodations. For venues, tour packages, and Sardine Run information, visit www.visitkznsouthcoast.co.za.
