Catalunya Rookies: Catalan Freestyle Rap Program in Barcelona Schools

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Catalunya Rookies, a program using improvised rap in Catalan, has completed pilot tests in Barcelona schools. It promotes the language through freestyle rap.

The project will be presented on June 5th at the Fundació Carulla, Barcelona. Versembrant's program targets educational centers, encouraging Catalan use through workshops for ages 12-18, fostering critical thinking and aiming to create a "passageway from classrooms to stages."

Students from Bernat Metge and Quatre Cantons schools participated. The program helped them use Catalan naturally. Versembrant also received positive feedback from families. The project aims to build a scene, bringing the language closer to young people's cultural habits and reversing the decline in Catalan use. More workshops are expected.

Catalunya Rookies promotes Catalan use and values like anti-racism and equality. Students who excel will participate in the Catalunya Freestyle final, the first professional Catalan rap competition.

The first school competition will be held on June 12th at the Quatre Cantons Institute.
